Line-Up Announced for Earth Hour Festival

Willoughby City Council is thrilled to announce the performers and participants in this year's Earth Hour festival, 5pm to 9:30pm, Saturday 28 March, Naremburn Park, corner of Park Road and Station Street, Naremburn.

The stage will come alive with an engaging performance by drumming troupe Rhythm Hunters, who will also conduct drumming workshops for adults and children throughout the evening to prepare the audience for the interactive drumming spectacular during Earth Hour, which begins at 8:30pm. Fire twirlers will also provide a dazzling display to light up the night.

Local performers including the Northside Music Collective, Artarmon Public School Jazz Band, Singing Made Easy and the KICK Performance Group are also getting in on the act. Melbourne based environmental educators Vox Bandicoot will showcase their unique brand of sustainability theatre with their Circus Sustainable show. The Sydney Mandolin Orchestra will enchant with traditional mandolin music.

Children and the young at heart can enjoy hands-on workshops specifically tailored to promote the message of sustainability. Reverse Garbage will be running recycling workshops where festival goers can make their own recycled instrument; and the team from Fizzics Education will help young scientists investigate electrical energy production in their renewable energy workshops. Adults won't be left out as Willoughby City Council will be running ClimateClever workshops to help residents reduce their carbon footprint and will be demonstrating sustainable living in their eco-house.

"I'm thrilled we have such an impressive line up of local and national talent to help us celebrate Earth Hour. I encourage the whole community to come to Naremburn Park and enjoy the festivities," said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly.

"Willoughby is committed to promoting the message of sustainability and the Earth Hour festival is providing an excellent platform to launch new programs for our residents, businesses and school community," he said.

Willoughby City Council will be launching their new climate action campaign. The campaign will deliver a range of programs to assist residents, businesses and schools take action on climate change. Information about the new programs on offer will be available at the festival.

Jane Caro, renowned author, social commentator and panellist on ABC TV's advertising commentary The Gruen Transfer will be the Master of Ceremonies for the event bringing a lively and entertaining element to the proceedings.

"Earth Hour is a wonderful way of reminding us about the importance of our environment. The event communicates that it only takes a little thought to do a lot and that the problem is not insurmountable if we all take action. It is an activity that gives us hope when so much of the news about the environment creates fear," said Jane Caro.

Dr Ben McNeil, Senior Fellow at the University of New South Wales' Climate Change Research Centre and a representative from the Australian Youth Climate Coalition will deliver keynote speeches at the event, detailing climate change research and actions the community can take to reduce their impact.

The festival will play host to a range of sustainable living stalls, including solar hot water and GreenPower. Attendees can find out about environmentally friendly additions to their homes and options to live more sustainably. Stall holders include Council, local community groups, not-for-profit organisations and sustainable businesses.

Organic coffee, curries and pies will delight the senses and children can enjoy face painting.

The event is supported by local community groups such as the Naremburn Progress Association, Artarmon Progress Association and the North Shore Climate Action Group.

The festival is a car free event. Residents are encouraged to walk, cycle or catch public transport. Bike valet parking will be available. Residents simply need to bring their own bike lock.

Local businesses are urged to make a commitment to Earth Hour by switching all non-essential lighting off from 8:30 to 9:30pm or longer where possible.
